Accommodation providers urged to end demanding deposit from NSFAS funded students



The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords not to demand a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes right after NSFAS been given reports about some accommodation providers who need NSFAS-funded students to pay for a deposit or top-up payment to be able to get use of the authorised private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation providers on the obligatory conditions, as supplied by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement amongst the personal accommodation vendors and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS explained in an announcement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states the lease are going to be paid every month to your accommodation supplier (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf of the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not call for or allow the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or any other types of payment on the lessor, or almost every other person in reference to this agreement, like payment of lease, even though awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall don't have any recourse towards the lessee for any default within the payment of check here rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation providers’ participation on nsfas document submission deadline the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded on account of an incorrect determination by NSFAS, the student will not be answerable for payment of any arrear rent on the accommodation supplier, up until finally the day of being defunded."
